I think the simplest way forward would be to follow through with your suggestions on both of these topics to either copy the existing 7265D-10 file or download and backport newer firmware. I know that upgrading to a later kernel (in particular 4.5+) has solved the wifi-adapter detection issue, however that later kernel ended up breaking my graphics card support. I'm having the same issue as these fellows, with roughly the same set up (Linux Mint 17.3 Cinn., 3.19 kernel, Intel 3165 adapter). It seems in this topic you are suggesting to essentially copy the 7265D-10 file and rename it to 3165-10, but in the other topic you recommend downloading newer firmware and using backports of later kernels.
